In the last couple of years there has been a huge advertising drive throughout to increase the consumption of whale meat and reduce the massive stocks of frozen whale meat. The future of whaling research was even thrown into doubt by the overload.

If you read this article (you seem to be fluent in Japanese) you'll see that Japanese people ate 2,000 gm of whale meat a year 40 years ago, but by 2005 that had fallen to just 50 grams.
At the same time the amount of frozen stock has been increasing, so this popularity drive in the name of 'healthy eating' etc. has taken place.
The chart on the right shows how much frozen stock they are stuck with.
